Come As You Are.
Train Hard.

Parents describe it the same way: come as you are, train hard, work hard, and have a good time doing it. Kids of every age and ability share one mat, black belts help teach the younger students, and the dojo doubles as a hangout. Card games, Magic: The Gathering, and an annual team trip to the World Championships in Las Vegas.

03 / What sets us apart

Not Your Typical
Karate School.

A Lineage Back To Chuck Norris

Chun Kuk Do, the Chuck Norris System. Founder Master Steve Giroux is a three-time World Grand Champion and sits on the UFAF Board.

A World-Stage Competition Team

Every summer our students compete at the UFAF World Championships in Las Vegas. The trophy wall in the lobby is real.

Every Age, Every Ability

One room of kids at different ages and levels, all engaged. Private lessons for kids who need a slower on-ramp.

Instructors Who Grew Up Here

Students who started in kindergarten are now the black belts teaching. Master Danny Sohmer walked in as a student in 2002.

04 / Started Here. Runs It Now.

Master Danny
Sohmer.

Danny started karate at four because he wanted to be a Ninja Turtle. He walked onto the Giroux Bros mat as a student in 2002, has competed at the UFAF World Championships since 2008, brought home two Norris Cups (forms and weapons) at the 2024 UFAF World Championships, and has taught here since 2012. Today he runs the Newtonville dojo he grew up in, and the kids in his classes are the reason it still feels like a second home.

Steve and his brother Jeff Giroux have trained and taught since 1984 — the "Bros" in Giroux Bros. Steve, now an 8th Degree Black Belt who has promoted more than 100 students to black belt, opened Giroux Bros in 1999 at 22, while finishing his last semester at Bentley College, with no money and a photo of a Las Vegas tournament win to convince the landlord. He earned his black belt at 11, competed in point sparring for 24 years, is a three-time Grand Champion and Norris Cup recipient at the UFAF World Championships, won the 2012 Wieland Norris Award, and sits on the UFAF Board of Directors.

"A winner never quits and a quitter never wins."

"My kids love going to Giroux Brothers for karate. Danny is an excellent instructor, he is able to teach a room full of kids of all different ages and abilities while keeping them engaged, responsible and having fun. It's very inclusive. So happy we found this place, I wish I had started my kids even younger!"

"Our 9 year old son has been taking karate classes at Giroux Brothers Newton for 3 years. We have seen him grow in confidence over the years. The studio is a good balance of discipline, respect, and fun, which is so important to have the kids wanting to come back. Our son also loves the weeklong camps in summer."
